Mary Fowler scored a late winner to help Manchester City secure a 3-2 victory over Austrian side St. Pölten in the Women’s Champions League. Following an impressive start to their European campaign with a 2-0 win against defending champions Barcelona, City faced a tough challenge from spirited opponents in Group D. Manchester City took an early lead in the fifth minute when Alanna Kennedy struck a stunning shot from 25 yards that deflected off the inside of the post and into the net.

After dominating the opening exchanges and creating several opportunities including a shot from Chloe Kelly that hit the woodwork, City seemed ready to extend their lead. However, St. Pölten capitalized on a corner just before halftime with Melanie Brunnthaler scoring from close range to level the match. The second half brought a shock for City as St. Pölten took the lead with Kamila Dubcova’s neat finish.

Fortunately for the visitors, Aoba Fujino equalized shortly after, calmly slotting in her first goal for the club. As the match approached its conclusion, Mary Fowler secured the win for Manchester City nodding home from a corner with just ten minutes left on the clock. City manager Gareth Taylor expressed satisfaction with the three points, acknowledging the lesson learned against a team that proved to be tougher than expected.

He emphasized the importance of the victory, stating that their strong start with six points from two games was promising. In contrast, Barcelona rebounded impressively from their defeat against City dominating Hammarby with a 9-0 win in another Group D matchup. Despite the challenging game against St. Pölten, Manchester City’s victory marks their sixth consecutive win across all competitions, maintaining their fine form.
