Mohamed Salah has faced backlash from some of his Muslim followers after posting a family picture in front of a Christmas tree, wishing his fans a “Merry Christmas” on Instagram. The Liverpool star, who is a practicing Muslim shared the festive photo with his wife, Magi and daughters Makka and Kayan, all dressed in matching pyjamas. The post which included a smiling family in front of a Christmas tree and a gingerbread figure, sparked a range of reactions from his 63.7 million followers.

Some fans criticized Salah for celebrating Christmas a holiday not traditionally observed by Muslims with one calling him “disgraceful” and threatening to unfollow him. Others expressed their disappointment, saying he let down the Muslim community. However, there were many fans who defended Salah, wishing him and his family well for the holiday season. One supporter wrote, “Merry Christmas Mo. Ignore all these idiots,” while another joked about the annual tradition of reading the comments on his Christmas post.

Salah, who has been in outstanding form this season, leading the Premier League’s golden boot race with 15 goals and 11 assists has made history by becoming the first Premier League player to register 10 goals and assists before Christmas. Despite the criticisms, Salah’s tradition of posting festive pictures with his family continues. Off the pitch, Salah’s future with Liverpool remains uncertain.

His contract expires at the end of the season, and although the club has offered him a new deal, no agreement has been reached yet. Mohamed Salah recently hinted at the possibility of leaving, stating he had not received any offers yet regarding his future with the club.
