Mohamed Salah's Contract Remarks "Selfish," Says Carragher
Mohamed Salah’s recent comments about Liverpool’s failure to offer him a new contract have sparked criticism from former Reds defender Jamie Carragher. Salah, whose contract expires at the end of the season expressed his disappointment after Liverpool’s win over Southampton, saying he is “probably more out than in” and that he has yet to receive a new offer. Salah has been in excellent form this season, leading the team with 12 goals across all competitions including two against Southampton.
Carragher criticized Salah’s remarks, calling them “selfish” and claiming they distract from Liverpool’s upcoming important fixtures including their Champions League clash with Real Madrid and a Premier League match against Manchester City. He argued that Salah’s comments shift the focus away from the team and onto his own situation. Despite Salah’s comments, a source close to Liverpool confirmed that discussions between the club and his agent Ramy Abbas Issa are ongoing and have been positive.
Chris Sutton speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, suggested that Salah’s decision to approach the press shows his desire to stay at Anfield as he made the first move to express his feelings. The main concern surrounding Mohamed Salah’s contract renewal is his age, as he is 32 and Liverpool may be hesitant to offer a long-term deal given the potential decline in performance as players reach their mid-30s.
The club is also dealing with other contract uncertainties with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk also set to be out of contract in the coming months. Carragher emphasized that Liverpool’s priority should be winning the Premier League this season not the futures of individual players. He reminded fans that the club has moved on from the departures of legends like Steven Gerrard and Graeme Souness and will continue to progress even if Salah eventually leaves.
