Northern Ireland secured promotion to League B in the Nations League with a 2-2 draw against Luxembourg, despite squandering a two-goal lead. Isaac Price and Conor Bradley scored to give Michael O’Neill’s team a commanding lead but quick goals from Seid Korac and Gerson Rodrigues set up a nervy final 15 minutes. Northern Ireland held on to earn the point needed to top Group C3.

Northern Ireland started brightly with Price opening the scoring in the first half. After a clever dummy by Dion Charles, Price curled a first-time effort into the bottom corner marking his fourth goal of the campaign. Early in the second half, Bradley doubled the lead heading Price’s cross towards goal with Luxembourg goalkeeper Tiago Pereira inadvertently pushing it into the net.

However, Luxembourg responded swiftly. Korac slid the ball into the net after a defensive mix-up and Rodrigues fired a powerful strike into the top corner minutes later to level the match. Northern Ireland weathered late pressure, helped by a crucial save from substitute goalkeeper Ralph Schon.

The result was enough to secure top spot in the group as Belarus and Bulgaria’s 1-1 draw ensured even a defeat would have sufficed. Topping the group not only earns Northern Ireland promotion but also keeps alive the possibility of a 2026 World Cup play-off spot through the Nations League rankings.

For Michael O’Neill’s youthful squad, the performance highlighted both promise and areas for growth. The draw for World Cup qualifying takes place on December 13, offering another opportunity for this emerging team to make their mark on the international stage.
