Northern Ireland Show Tactical Improvement in Loss to Norway

Northern Ireland boss Tanya Oxtoby praised her team for showing resilience despite their heavy 4-0 defeat to Norway in the first leg of the Euro 2025 play-off at Inver Park. Norway dominated the first half with Tuva Hansen scoring twice and Caroline Graham Hansen adding a brace leaving Northern Ireland facing a daunting 4-0 deficit at halftime. However, Oxtoby felt encouraged by her team’s improved performance in the second half. “We could have crumbled at 3-0 down but the players showed great character,” she said.

The team made tactical adjustments including changing their shape and introducing Chloe McCarron for Danielle Maxwell which gave the midfield more stability and allowed Northern Ireland to apply more pressure. Oxtoby emphasized her side’s tactical flexibility and defensive improvements in the second half. “We were more aggressive and controlled the ball better,” she noted, praising the players for closing down Norway’s attacking spaces.

Despite conceding disappointing goals, Oxtoby believes the experience will be invaluable for her young team’s growth. Looking ahead to the second leg in Oslo, Oxtoby remains focused on performance and development, acknowledging the challenges of facing a top side like Norway. “We need to continue to grow and learn quickly,” she emphasized.

Although Northern Ireland’s chances of reaching their second successive Euros are slim, Oxtoby is determined to ensure her team maintains high standards and doesn’t ease off. “It’s about the bigger picture and we will continue to work hard for improvement.”
