Pep Guardiola, Manchester City’s manager since 2016 has agreed to a one-year contract extension, potentially taking his tenure to 10 years. While the club has not commented, multiple sources confirm the deal which may include an option for a second year. Guardiola, 53, has won 18 trophies with City including six Premier League titles and the historic 2022-23 Treble—Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League.
Despite City’s current struggles including a rare four-match losing streak and trailing Premier League leaders Liverpool by five points, Guardiola remains committed. His contract was set to expire this season, and speculation about his future has been fueled by his statement that he felt “closer to leaving than staying” and the impending departure of City’s director of football, Txiki Begiristain.
Guardiola, the Premier League’s longest-serving manager reportedly reflected deeply on his future considering offers like the England job and his family’s absence in Manchester. Ultimately, he decided he still has the energy and motivation to continue at City. Under Guardiola, City has set multiple records including becoming the first team to achieve 100 Premier League points and winning four successive English top-flight titles.
They also secured their first Champions League title in 2023. Pep Guardiola has faced challenges including squad injuries and uncertainty over 115 Premier League charges against the club which City denies. A highly decorated manager, Guardiola previously led Barcelona to two Champions League titles and Bayern Munich to three Bundesliga wins.
After achieving nearly everything possible at City, his extension signals his determination to face fresh challenges and lead the club through a transitional phase with key players nearing contract ends.
