Real Madrid Cancels Attendance at Ballon d'Or Ceremony
Real Madrid has unexpectedly canceled its delegation’s plans to attend the Ballon d’Or ceremony in Paris on Monday after sources indicated that their Brazilian forward Vinicius Jr. is unlikely to win the prestigious award. The club has recognized that the 24-year-old previously considered a strong contender and the Champions League Player of the Year will not take home the honor.
Bookmakers listed Vinicius Jr. as the overwhelming favorite to secure his first Ballon d’Or ahead of Manchester City’s Rodri and Real Madrid teammate Jude Bellingham. Vinicius played a crucial role in Real Madrid’s success last season, contributing to the team’s Champions League and La Liga titles. Bellingham just 21 also had a stellar year earning the La Liga MVP title after scoring a career-best 19 goals in his debut season while helping England reach the Euro 2024 final.
Rodri, praised by Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola as “the best midfielder in the world,” played a pivotal role in leading his team to an unprecedented fourth consecutive Premier League title. He also earned the title of best player at this year’s European Championship after Spain secured their fourth title.
The Ballon d’Or awards rely on votes from a panel of journalists who represent the top 100 FIFA-ranked countries, making it one of the most respected accolades in football. As of now, both Real Madrid and France Football, the organization behind the awards have not commented on the cancellation of the club’s attendance at the ceremony.
