Rodrigo Bentancur has received strong support from Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou after the FA banned the midfielder for seven matches for using a racial slur about teammate Son Heung-min. During a June interview on Uruguayan television, Bentancur made an offensive remark referencing Son. The 27-year-old acknowledged his mistake, apologized on social media and called it a “very bad joke.” He also expressed remorse directly to Son, who supported his teammate and stated that Bentancur did not intend any malice.
Tottenham accepted the FA’s guilty verdict but appealed the severity of the punishment which includes a £100,000 fine and mandatory participation in a face-to-face education programme. Postecoglou supported both the club’s appeal and Bentancur describing the midfielder as an “outstanding person” and a “teammate of the utmost character.” The Spurs boss emphasized that Bentancur understands his mistake, remains ready to accept his punishment and aims to learn from the situation.
The suspension prevents Bentancur from playing in key Premier League matches against Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea as well as a Carabao Cup quarter-final against Manchester United. However, he can still participate in Tottenham’s Europa League fixtures. Bentancur’s remark and the subsequent ban have prompted wider discussions about the impact of such comments.
Son and others at the club accepted Rodrigo Bentancur’s apology while Postecoglou underscored the importance of accountability and education. By appealing the length of the ban, Spurs demonstrated their belief in Bentancur’s character while acknowledging the need for personal growth and responsibility.
