Ruben Amorim in Talks to Replace Erik ten Hag at Man United
Ruben Amorim has been approached by Manchester United as a potential replacement for Erik ten Hag, with talks underway with Sporting Lisbon. Sporting Lisbon confirmed that United has expressed willingness to pay Amorim’s €10 million (£8.31 million) release clause, releasing an official statement to the stock market. United and Sporting are actively negotiating Amorim’s start date as United aims to have him in place for their upcoming Premier League match against Chelsea, though several logistical obstacles remain.
At 39, Amorim has attracted significant attention for his success in Portugal, notably leading Sporting to its first league title in 19 years in 2020-21 and securing another top-flight victory last season. Many consider him one of Europe’s most promising young coaches, with recent links to other top clubs, including Manchester City. Amorim originally intended to remain with Sporting until the end of the season, but interest from United and two rounds of talks may accelerate his departure.
Responding to media questions today, Amorim reiterated his commitment to Sporting ahead of their Portuguese League Cup fixture against Nacional which could mark his final match in charge. United decided to part ways with Ten Hag following a poor start to the season, which has left the team in 14th place in the Premier League and struggling in the Europa League.
Despite offering Ten Hag support amid recent backroom changes, the United board ultimately saw the need for a leadership change, though sources report it was a challenging choice. If Ruben Amorim agrees to terms, he could travel to England as soon as Wednesday with United eager to leverage his expertise in an effort to turn around their current underwhelming form.
