Sergio Conceicao Appointed AC Milan Head Coach
Sergio Conceicao, former Porto manager has been appointed as AC Milan’s new head coach following the sacking of Paulo Fonseca. The 50-year-old Portuguese coach, who enjoyed a successful six-year stint at Porto has signed an 18-month contract with the Serie A club. Conceicao’s tenure at Porto saw him win 11 trophies, making him one of the most successful coaches in the club’s history.
He left Porto at the end of last season and now takes on the challenge of reviving Milan, who are currently in a disappointing position. Milan sits in eighth place in Serie A, 14 points behind joint-leaders Atalanta and Napoli, following a 1-1 draw with Roma that led to Fonseca’s dismissal. Fonseca, who had replaced Stefano Pioli in June, faced pressure after Milan’s poor form including their struggles in the Champions League.
Milan currently sits 12th in the competition’s 36-team standings, having won only four of their six matches. Conceicao’s first match in charge will be on January 3 when Milan faces Juventus in the first leg of the Italian Super Cup semi-finals. A unique twist to the match will see Conceicao manage against his son, Francisco, who plays for Juventus.
Reflecting on his new role, Sergio Conceicao expressed pride and readiness to get to work, emphasizing that while the emotions are temporary, the focus must be on improving the team. With Milan hoping to turn around their fortunes, all eyes will be on the new manager as he works to restore the club to its former glory.
