Sonia Bompastor Secures First Win as Chelsea Manager

Sonia Bompastor’s Chelsea era kicked off with a 1-0 win over Aston Villa as two Women’s Super League managers made their debuts on Friday but only one emerged victorious. Bompastor stepping into the role left by legendary coach Emma Hayes, couldn’t have asked for a better start securing three points at Kingsmeadow. “It’s always important to start with a win, especially at home,” she said, emphasizing that the victory would build confidence within the squad.

The defending champions, seeking their sixth consecutive WSL title had a new look to Kingsmeadow with banners featuring Bompastor’s face and the slogan “Vive La Revolution.” The Frenchwoman received a warm welcome from the fans and her team’s determination to win was evident, though they faced a strong challenge from Aston Villa. Despite creating several chances, Chelsea were pushed to the limit with goalkeeper Hannah Hampton making crucial saves to preserve their lead.

Former England midfielder Fara Williams noted Chelsea’s resilience, saying, “They showed they could grind out a result.” On the other side, Aston Villa under new manager Robert de Pauw delivered an impressive performance, indicating why they are confident of a top-six finish. Midfielder Missy Bo Kearns and winger Chasity Grant stood out while substitute Katie Robinson was a constant threat.

De Pauw expressed pride in his team’s display, despite the result, saying, “If you can force the champions like this, it says something about the power we have.” Although Villa didn’t get a point, De Pauw is hopeful for the future, urging his players to use the disappointment as fuel for their next game at Villa Park. Both managers made their mark with Sonia Bompastor’s Chelsea claiming a crucial early win.
