Sonia Bompastor expressed her disbelief at the homophobic comments aimed at Sam Kerr and Kristie Mewis after the couple announced their pregnancy. Kerr, the Chelsea striker shared the news on Instagram, revealing they are expecting a baby in 2025. However, the post received hateful and homophobic reactions from some users. Sonia Bompastor condemned the comments, saying, “It’s just crazy for me to understand how people can react like this. I fully support Sam and Kristie, and we should focus on the positive.”

She emphasized the joy of becoming a mother, describing it as “the best news you can have in your life.” Chelsea also issued a statement condemning the abuse, reinforcing their commitment to inclusivity and diversity. The club stressed there was “no place for discrimination” and reiterated its pride in being a diverse and welcoming organization. Chelsea defender Millie Bright expressed her happiness for Kerr and Mewis, saying, “Seeing the joy it brings for both of them – that’s what we’re here for.”

She also highlighted the importance of supporting one another and called for more action from social media companies and football authorities to tackle online abuse. Bright criticized the toxic environment on social media, sharing her own concerns about the impact of online hate on personal lives. Former footballer Jen Beattie added that the incident serves as a reminder of the work still needed to combat hate in society and on social media.

Beattie emphasized the progress of women’s football but lamented the persistent homophobic and racial abuse in both the men’s and women’s games. Chelsea’s LGBTQ+ supporters’ group, Chelsea Pride also condemned the hateful comments, calling for unity and celebrating love and pride. Meta, the parent company of Instagram stated it takes abuse seriously and continues to improve its policies to address the issue.
