The Minnesota Vikings secured a 23-17 victory over the New York Jets in London, denying Aaron Rodgers a thrilling comeback. The Vikings one of the last two unbeaten NFL teams took early control with a 17-0 lead. A 63-yard interception return by Andrew Van Ginkel and a touchdown drive led by Sam Darnold put Minnesota in a commanding position.
Rodgers trying to rally the Jets, threw two touchdown passes including one to Garrett Wilson with six minutes left, cutting the score to 20-17. However, the Vikings added a field goal and Rodgers’ final drive ended in his third interception sealing the win for Minnesota. The Jets dropped to 2-3 while the Vikings improved to 5-0. The Vikings have become one of the NFL’s feelgood stories, despite facing significant adversity.
The team overcame the tragic death of rookie Khyree Jackson and the season-ending injury of quarterback JJ McCarthy to remain unbeaten. They have now beaten three teams that reached last season’s playoffs including Super Bowl runner-up San Francisco. Rodgers had a difficult day, completing only 53.7% of his 54 passes and being intercepted three times, a rare occurrence for the four-time MVP.
While the Jets mounted a second-half fightback, their poor protection of Rodgers and lack of a rushing game proved costly as they managed just 36 yards on the ground. Minnesota’s defense dominated the first half and their resilience in the second half kept them ahead. The Minnesota Vikings now head into a bye week while the New York Jets will need to regroup as they aim to end their lengthy playoff drought.
