The NFL Playoffs Set: Key Wildcard Matchups and Predictions
Football | January 09, 2025
The teams for the NFL playoffs are set and you can check out our Wildcard Weekend predictions later in this column.

The NFL playoffs are set and the Wildcard Weekend predictions are in. The Detroit Lions ended their historic regular season with a dominant 31-9 victory over the Minnesota Vikings. The win secured the NFC’s number one seed, giving them a first-round bye and home-field advantage. Jahmyr Gibbs starred with four touchdowns but it was the Lions’ defense that impressed, especially their ability to shut down top receivers Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison. Despite 16 players on injured reserve, the Lions showcased their resilience, sending a powerful message to the NFL: “We’re ready for the big time.”

Meanwhile, the Cincinnati Bengals were denied a playoff spot after Denver’s win over Kansas City. Despite Joe Burrow’s MVP-caliber season and Ja’Marr Chase’s receiving dominance, the Bengals’ poor defense held them back from playoff contention. Burrow’s performance, alongside a lackluster defense, left many wondering how dangerous they could have been in the postseason.

As for teams resting players, some questioned the Chiefs’ decision to sit key starters after securing the AFC’s top seed. With Patrick Mahomes and coach Andy Reid, though, the Chiefs remain a formidable force despite the long gap between games.

Now, onto the Wildcard Weekend predictions:

AFC:

  • Los Angeles Chargers (5) at Houston Texans (4): Chargers to win with a revamped culture under new leadership.
  • Pittsburgh Steelers (6) at Baltimore Ravens (3): Ravens to edge out the Steelers, thanks to Lamar Jackson’s resurgence.
  • Denver Broncos (7) at Buffalo Bills (2): Bills to win, bolstered by the electric atmosphere and Josh Allen’s play.

NFC:

  • Green Bay Packers (7) at Philadelphia Eagles (2): Eagles to take the win, despite injury concerns.
  • Washington Commanders (6) at Tampa Bay Buccaneers (3): Commanders’ rookie QB Jayden Daniels to shine in a thrilling match-up.
  • Minnesota Vikings (5) at Los Angeles Rams (4): Rams to replicate the Lions’ success and advance.

The playoffs are set to be intense with exciting matchups across both conferences.
