Thomas Tuchel (51) will take charge as head coach of the England men’s team on 1 January, signing an 18-month contract focused on the 2026 World Cup. Acknowledging the weight of history, the German coach urged England to “free ourselves from history” and prioritize the process of winning their first major men’s trophy since 1966. Tuchel known for his tactical expertise and successful stints at Chelsea, PSG and Bayern Munich, expressed excitement about working with England’s talented squad.

He plans to create a style of play that can drive the team toward success. Initially hesitant about the switch from club to international football, he embraced the challenge and views the role as an 18-month “project” aimed at World Cup glory. Amid some criticism that the position should have gone to an English coach, Tuchel emphasized his passion for English football. He highlighted his deep connection to the Premier League and his pride in leading the national team. Tuchel has not yet decided whether he will sing the British national anthem.

However, he pledged to show respect for the tradition either way. FA chief executive Mark Bullingham called Thomas Tuchel “one of the best coaches in the world,” after a confidential interview process that included both English and non-English candidates. Tuchel steps in to replace Gareth Southgate, who resigned following England’s Euro 2024 final loss to Spain. He now faces the challenge of guiding England through World Cup qualification and leading them to success in 2026.
