Thomas Tuchel Set to Become England Manager
Thomas Tuchel the former Chelsea manager has reportedly agreed to become the next England boss, making him the third non-British manager of the national team after Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello. Since Gareth Southgate resigned following England’s Euro 2024 final loss to Spain, the team has been without a permanent manager. Interim manager Lee Carsley will continue leading England for their final Nations League matches in November before Tuchel is formally unveiled at Wembley.
Tuchel, who led Chelsea from 2021 to 2022 and won the Champions League will guide England through the 2026 World Cup qualification. The Football Association previously approached Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola for the role but they found Tuchel’s familiarity with English football a compelling factor. Tuchel’s versatility demonstrated through various tactical approaches at PSG, Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich has impressed many.
Former players like Pat Nevin and Stephen Warnock have particularly noted his adaptability. His ability to thrive within a national team setup, free from the transfer disputes that often arose at club level should ease his transition to international management. While some, like former manager Harry Redknapp voiced disappointment that the FA didn’t choose an English coach, others see Tuchel’s tactical expertise as the ideal fit for England.
His primary challenge will be meeting the high expectations of winning a major tournament with his immediate focus on the 2026 World Cup. England hasn’t secured a major trophy since the 1966 World Cup and Thomas Tuchel’s appointment reflects the FA’s determination to end that drought.
