Vangelis Pavlidis: Greece Gives Everything for George Baldock

Vangelis Pavlidis expressed that Greece’s players “gave everything” in honor of their late teammate George Baldock, who passed away just a day before their historic win against England at Wembley. Pavlidis scored in stoppage time leading Greece to a 2-1 victory over the Euro 2024 finalists. Before the Nations League match, a minute’s silence was observed in memory of Baldock.

After scoring, Vangelis Pavlidis raised his black armband high and the team celebrated by lifting Baldock’s number two shirt. Pavlidis emphasized the significance of the game, stating, “We want to play for him and give everything for him.” Baldock, 31, tragically drowned in a swimming pool at his home in Glyfada, Greece. His family released a heartfelt statement expressing their heartbreak over the loss of their “beloved George.”

They emphasized his important roles as a father, fiancé and friend. Despite learning of Baldock’s death just hours before the match, Greece secured their first-ever victory over England in competitive play, marking a significant moment in their football history. Manager Ivan Jovanovic noted the team’s determination to honor Baldock’s memory, stating, “He was with us in spirit.”

The Greek players had sought to postpone the match out of respect but UEFA confirmed the schedule could not accommodate changes. In a collective statement, the players expressed their indescribable pain and dedication to Baldock, stating, “We will try to reach the strength of his soul.” Baldock was a key member of the Greece squad for the Euro 2024 play-off against Georgia, earning 12 caps during his international career.

After a successful stint with Sheffield United, he joined Panathinaikos. His untimely passing has left a profound impact on the football community with players and managers alike reflecting on the significance of his life and legacy.
