Viktor Gyökeres Scores Four as Sweden Crush Azerbaijan
Viktor Gyökeres delivered a masterclass scoring four goals as Sweden overwhelmed Azerbaijan in a dominant Nations League performance. Tottenham’s Dejan Kulusevski added two goals while Newcastle’s Alexander Isak missed a penalty in Sweden’s emphatic victory. Sweden already assured of winning Nations League Group C1 wasted no time asserting control. Kulusevski opened the scoring in the 10th minute before setting up Gyökeres for Sweden’s second. Gyökeres struck again in the 37th minute extending the lead.
Alexander Isak appeared to make it 4-0 just before halftime but VAR ruled the goal offside. The Newcastle forward’s struggles continued when his penalty was saved by Azerbaijan goalkeeper Rza Cafarov. However, Kulusevski scored Sweden’s fourth nine minutes later, capitalizing on Sweden’s relentless attack. Azerbaijan already relegated from the group instantly lost possession from the restart, enabling Gyökeres to secure his hat-trick. The 26-year-old striker added his fourth goal in the 70th minute completing an unforgettable performance.
Gyökeres has been in phenomenal form this season, netting 23 goals for Sporting and nine for Sweden. Earlier this month, he scored a hat-trick in Sporting’s 4-1 Champions League victory over Manchester City marking the end of Ruben Amorim’s tenure as Sporting’s manager before his move to Manchester United. Amid his red-hot form, Gyökeres has drawn transfer interest, reportedly linked to a reunion with Amorim at Old Trafford. His £83 million release clause only adds to the speculation.
Sweden’s dominant win highlights their growing strength while Azerbaijan’s relegation underscores a challenging campaign. With Viktor Gyökeres in blistering form, Sweden looks well-prepared for future challenges in the Nations League’s higher tier.
