Vinay Menon celebrates Chelsea's 2021 Champions League victory over Manchester City alongside then-manager Thomas Tuchel.
Vinay Menon born in Kerala and inspired by his yogi grandfather, embarked on an unexpected journey into the world of football. Despite knowing little about the sport, Menon became Chelsea’s first wellness coach in 2009 after the father of Roman Abramovich’s then-wife recommended him. While delivering wellness and yoga sessions to billionaires and celebrities in Dubai, Menon caught Abramovich’s attention.
Impressed, Abramovich invited him to work with Chelsea’s first-team squad, even though Menon had no prior exposure to football. Initially, Chelsea’s elite squad resisted Menon’s philosophy and approach but striker Didier Drogba quickly became an ally. Menon focused on meditation, mental clarity and dispelling the negative thoughts associated with top-flight football.
Over time, players like Joe Cole, Frank Lampard and John Terry embraced his methods. Menon played a key role in Chelsea’s backroom staff for 13 years, helping the team secure all their trophies from 2010 until the club’s ownership change in 2022 led to his departure. After leaving Chelsea, Menon joined Roberto Martinez’s Belgium staff for the 2022 World Cup. His role as an Indian in such a prominent position caught the attention of his compatriots.
Vinay Menon advocates for a cultural shift in India towards valuing sports alongside academics, believing that with the right infrastructure, India could one day compete on the world stage. He remains hopeful for the future of Indian football and is committed to supporting its growth.
