Wales Eye Montenegro Win After Strong Start

Wales will aim to build on their strong start under new manager Craig Bellamy when they face Montenegro in the Nations League on Monday. In Bellamy’s debut match at home against Turkey, Wales impressed with their aggressive and adventurous style despite ending in a goalless draw with the ten-man Euro 2024 quarter-finalists. Bellamy plans to adapt his strategy for the upcoming game against Montenegro, who lost 2-0 to Iceland in their opening match.

“Different opposition means different threats and weaknesses, so we’ll definitely adjust our approach,” said Bellamy. He emphasized the importance of maintaining defensive solidity which he considers non-negotiable for the team’s success. Since Bellamy’s appointment in July, Welsh football has experienced a revitalization sparking excitement among fans, players and the Football Association of Wales.

The game against Turkey showcased Wales as a transformed team, both in possession and while pressing opponents. Bellamy described the performance as “outstanding” but indicated that much more lies ahead. The match, originally scheduled for the Podgorica National Stadium, moved to Niksic due to pitch issues. Bellamy minimized the impact of the change focusing on adaptability and performing at their best regardless of the conditions.

Bellamy confirmed that he has a fully fit squad including striker Kieffer Moore, who recovered from an injury sustained during the Turkey game. Historically, Montenegro has won their past two home games, including victories over Wales in August 2009 and September 2010. Wales will seek to overcome a poor away record and break a recent trend of failing to score in their last four internationals.
