Wales squandered a 2-0 lead to draw 2-2 with Iceland in Reykjavik, marking their first major setback under head coach Craig Bellamy in the Nations League. Brennan Johnson opened the scoring, reacting quickly after Harry Wilson’s shot was saved before Wilson himself added a second with a composed finish from a beautiful Neco Williams pass. Despite dominating the first half, Wales fell apart in the second.

Iceland, who had missed several chances, pulled one back through Logi Tomasson whose low strike made it 2-1. Moments later, Tomasson again broke through delivering a cross that goalkeeper Danny Ward inadvertently turned into his own net. Iceland nearly snatched a win as Jon Dagur Thorsteinsson hit the post but Wales held on to salvage a point. This draw leaves Wales two points behind Group B4 leaders Turkey, dampening the optimism from Bellamy’s first two games in charge.

While the new coach remains unbeaten in three competitive matches, this disappointing performance highlighted the risks of his expansive, high-tempo playing style. Wales’ inability to maintain control after a strong start will be a concern ahead of their next match against Montenegro in Cardiff. Despite their promising opening, Bellamy’s side struggled in the second half, offering little in attack as Iceland surged.

The setback serves as a reminder of the challenges Bellamy faces in implementing his new tactics but he will be eager for a strong response in the upcoming match.
