Xabi Alonso stated he will prioritize the game over emotional ties during Bayer Leverkusen’s Champions League clash against Liverpool at Anfield on Tuesday. Addressing reporters, he dismissed questions regarding his past with the Reds, emphasizing, “there is no time for tourism.” Alonso has enjoyed a remarkable 2023-24 season leading Leverkusen to their first Bundesliga title, breaking Bayern Munich’s 11-year reign. The team lost just one match across all competitions, although they fell to Atalanta in the Europa League final.

The former midfielder, who played for Liverpool from 2004 to 2009 made 210 appearances and won the Champions League in 2005. Despite speculation linking him to replace Jurgen Klopp, Alonso opted to remain with Leverkusen, who subsequently hired Arne Slot as their manager. When discussing the upcoming match, Alonso highlighted the significance of the challenge Liverpool presents, calling them “one of the best, if not the best in Europe.”

He indicated that the focus should be on the talented players in both squads rather than on his past. Xabi Alonso acknowledged that he would reflect on his emotions after the game while Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher anticipated a warm reception for him from fans but stressed the importance of securing a positive result.

While Leverkusen currently sits fourth in the Bundesliga and sixth in the Champions League standings, they have only suffered one loss this season.  Slot praised last year’s impressive performance but noted that this season’s results have been less favorable.

He urged his players to improve especially after a lackluster showing against Brighton, recognizing that strong teams like Leverkusen require solid play on both offense and defense. The match promises to be a thrilling encounter showcasing two competitive squads in European football.
