Belgian GP Drama: Hamilton Inherits Win After Russell’s DQ

Belgian Grand Prix wrapped up several key storylines as Formula 1 heads into its summer break after an exciting race. George Russell’s disqualification for an underweight car cost him a remarkable victory but Mercedes still celebrated as inherited the win, marking the team’s third victory in four races. Mercedes’ resurgence is notable, given their early-season struggles and Hamilton expressed optimism for a competitive second half of the season.

Team boss Toto Wolff advised cautious optimism, acknowledging fluctuating performances. Lando Norris rued a costly mistake that dropped him from fourth to fifth. Despite this, McLaren remains a strong contender with Norris and teammate Oscar Piastri continuing to perform well. Piastri’s second place, after Russell’s disqualification, kept McLaren competitive in the constructors’ championship just 43 points behind Red Bull.

Max Verstappen extended his championship lead despite finishing fourth, expressing a need for Red Bull to improve their performance. Verstappen’s teammate, Sergio Perez continues to struggle prompting speculation about his replacement by either reserve driver Liam Lawson or Daniel Ricciardo. Mercedes and McLaren’s slow start to the season allowed Verstappen to build a substantial lead.

However, both teams’ recent improvements promise an exciting second half. Norris admitted to making errors in recent races, including the Belgian Grand Prix and vowed to come back stronger. Ferrari also showed progress with Charles Leclerc finishing close to the leaders. Russell, reflecting on the tight competition, noted that if the season had started in Montreal, the standings would be different.

The second half of the season promises intense battles among Mercedes, McLaren, Red Bull and Ferrari.
