Carlos Sainz Reflects on Ferrari Exit and Strong 2024 Comeback

Carlos Sainz has shared his feelings about the unexpected news that Lewis Hamilton would replace him at Ferrari for the 2025 Formula 1 season. Speaking on the Beyond The Grid podcast, Sainz admitted the announcement was a “massive shock” that left him unprepared and made the winter period particularly challenging. He had been expecting to stay with Ferrari for a fourth season but the sudden decision forced him to manage both his on-track performance and negotiations for a new seat with rival teams.

Despite the disappointment, Sainz delivered one of his strongest campaigns in 2024, bouncing back from surgery for appendicitis to win the Australian Grand Prix and securing a pole position and victory double in Mexico. Reflecting on the season, Sainz said the adversity made him a “much better driver” and athlete.

“I wasn’t ready for the news. It hurt because it was unexpected,” he said. “But I trained hard and prepared to win races, even in that uncomfortable situation. The Australian Grand Prix podium was emotional with my family and team around me, knowing they had seen me struggle during the winter.”

Sainz eventually secured a move to Williams for 2025, debuting with the team at the post-season Abu Dhabi test. While he remains focused on helping Williams return to the front of the grid, Sainz hasn’t ruled out a future reunion with Ferrari. “Why not? I’m 30, and drivers compete into their 40s. Who knows what could happen in the next decade?” he said, though he emphasized his priority is succeeding with Williams.

Carlos Sainz’s resilience in the face of Ferrari’s decision highlights his determination, turning a challenging period into motivation for one of the most successful seasons of his career.
