Charles Leclerc likely would have finished third if Ferrari had opted for a two-stop strategy.
Charles Leclerc achieved an extraordinary home victory for Ferrari at the Italian Grand Prix overcoming McLaren drivers Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris. Ferrari’s one-stop strategy for Leclerc, a tactical shift mid-race helped him surpass the McLarens, who employed a two-stop approach. Despite fierce competition in the final laps from the McLarens, Leclerc managed to hold his lead finishing 2.6 seconds ahead and thrilling the passionate tifosi in the stands.
Red Bull’s Max Verstappen struggled and finished sixth, while Norris managed to reduce his championship deficit to 62 points with eight races remaining, thanks to a fastest lap. McLaren now trails Red Bull by only eight points in the constructors’ championship. McLaren seemed poised for a one-two finish as Piastri led Norris after a successful pass early in the race.
However, Norris’s early pit stop strategy and subsequent tyre issues caused him to fall behind. Piastri’s second pit stop did not prevent Leclerc from taking the lead as Ferrari’s one-stop gamble paid off. Sainz, Leclerc’s teammate finished fourth behind the two McLarens. Charles Leclerc victory marked his second Monza win, following his first in 2019. He expressed immense joy, comparing the emotions to his first win and emphasizing the special nature of winning in Monaco and Monza.
McLaren’s Piastri admitted the team’s strategy might have been flawed but was satisfied with his performance. Norris, though disappointed with third place, continued his quest to close the gap to Verstappen. Meanwhile, Hamilton finished fifth and Verstappen had a challenging race with Red Bull’s hard tyre choice and a slow pit stop contributing to his difficulties.
In the final points positions, Alex Albon of Williams and Haas driver Kevin Magnussen secured ninth and tenth places, respectively.
