Christian Horner praised Max Verstappen’s work ethic and mindset after the Dutch driver secured the 2024 Formula 1 title, despite facing challenges with his car. The season began with a strong start for Verstappen, winning six of the first nine races and dominating the Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and Japan Grands Prix. However, he then entered a nine-race winless streak, an unexpected dry spell since 2020 as McLaren emerged as a formidable competitor while Ferrari and Mercedes also vied for victories.
Horner reflected on the team’s mid-season struggles, explaining how other teams became more competitive and Red Bull began facing technical issues. Despite these setbacks, Verstappen remained calm and focused. He worked closely with the engineering team, spending long hours in the simulator and collaborating with vehicle dynamicists and aerodynamicists to identify and address the car’s problems.
According to Christian Horner, Verstappen’s leadership and technical feedback were key in guiding the team through this challenging phase. Verstappen’s straightforward communication helped pinpoint the areas where the car was underperforming, allowing engineers to focus their efforts on improving specific issues. This collaboration ultimately paid off as the car’s performance began to improve in the latter part of the season.
Horner highlighted Verstappen’s consistency and maturity as crucial to his success. Despite not winning every race, Verstappen consistently finished in the top six and secured valuable points. His ability to adapt and his strategic approach were vital in maintaining his lead in the standings. Horner emphasized that Verstappen’s “tenacious driving, strategy and teamwork” were key factors in his title victory, showcasing another level of maturity and experience in his driving.
