Fernando Alonso reflects on his illustrious Formula 1 career and his enduring dream of securing a third world championship, despite being 43 and 18 years removed from his last title. “I still dream,” Alonso says, acknowledging that 2026, under new regulations might be his last realistic chance. His unwavering belief in success, despite the challenges of recent years, underscores his passion for the sport.

The two-time champion last won a race 11 years ago and saw his 2023 season with Aston Martin begin strongly with several podiums, only for the team’s form to decline later. However, Alonso remains optimistic especially with Aston Martin’s acquisition of legendary designer Adrian Newey, who will join the team in 2025.  Alonso views Newey’s arrival as a game-changer with hopes that his expertise will propel Aston Martin to the top under the 2026 regulations.

Alonso, who signed a contract extension keeping him with the team until 2026, dismisses concerns about age impacting his performance. He emphasizes his intense dedication to fitness and preparation which he believes has allowed him to compete at the highest level into his mid-40s. His remarkable longevity is a testament to his discipline and love for the sport which he credits for maintaining his motivation.

Reflecting on his career, Fernando Alonso notes he has rarely driven dominant cars but remains hopeful that 2026 could finally provide the platform for a championship challenge. While he acknowledges younger fans may doubt him due to his age, he is determined to prove them wrong. Looking ahead, Alonso remains open to extending his career beyond 2026 if the circumstances are right. Until then, he plans to savor every race, racing as if it’s his last, fueled by his enduring passion and competitive spirit.
