Formula 1 Delays Rookie Race Until 2025

Formula 1 officials have postponed plans for a ‘rookie race’ until at least 2025. This initiative aimed to host a sprint-style event during the post-season test in Abu Dhabi allowing aspiring drivers to showcase their skills in F1 machinery. However, during a recent F1 Commission meeting, members concluded that more time is necessary to develop the concept effectively.

The FIA released a statement indicating that, despite widespread support for the rookie race, organizational and timing constraints prevented it from happening in 2024. The governing body along with teams and commercial rights holder Liberty Media expressed concerns that the plan felt rushed. Team members have already endured the longest season in F1 history and many would have to remain in Abu Dhabi after the final race for the new event.

Additional concerns included logistics, freight implications and how the event would be broadcasted to ensure audience appeal. While there is no guarantee the race will take place in 2025, the intention remains to create this opportunity for young drivers. The idea for the rookie race stems from worries that young drivers have limited chances to prove themselves due to stringent testing restrictions imposed for cost-saving purposes.

Holding a race for these drivers shortly after the season’s final grand prix would give teams a chance to evaluate their abilities. In addition to discussing the rookie race, the Formula 1 Commission agreed to revise the regulations for 2026 which will introduce significant changes to both chassis and engines to improve aerodynamic performance. This decision comes after teams raised concerns about the speed of the 2026 cars.

The commission also discussed revisions to sporting and financial regulations to simplify their structure and ensure a competitive balance.
