Franco Colapinto, the Argentine driver has joined Alpine as a reserve on a multi-year deal, leaving Williams where he made an impressive F1 debut last season. The 21-year-old raced nine times for Williams in 2024, standing out with his quick adaptation, though a series of crashes in Brazil and Las Vegas dampened Red Bull’s interest in signing him. Alpine successfully negotiated Colapinto’s release from Williams, who had no race seat available for him due to the arrival of Carlos Sainz alongside Alex Albon.
Alpine executive Flavio Briatore hailed Colapinto as “one of the best young talents in motorsport,” emphasizing his potential to contribute to Alpine’s long-term goals. Colapinto expressed gratitude to Williams for helping him achieve his F1 dream but called the move to Alpine “an honour.” Alpine’s 2025 race lineup includes Pierre Gasly and rookie Jack Doohan. Doohan, son of MotoGP legend Mick Doohan debuted at the 2024 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, qualifying last and finishing 15th, significantly off Gasly’s pace.
Colapinto’s addition intensifies competition within Alpine, offering the team an option should Doohan struggle. He will also join reserve drivers Paul Aron and Ryo Hirakawa in Alpine’s testing program. Aron finished third in Formula 2 last year while Hirakawa, a former McLaren development driver will drive in practice at the 2025 Japanese Grand Prix. Testing older cars has become a key avenue for teams to develop non-racing drivers within F1’s strict testing limits.
Alpine’s deal with Franco Colapinto strengthens its driver pool and enhances its future prospects. Williams team principal James Vowles supported the move, stating it offers Colapinto the best path to a race seat in 2025 or 2026. Meanwhile, Colapinto’s Argentine sponsorship support adds to his appeal, positioning him as a valuable asset for Alpine.
