Johnny Herbert has left his role as an FIA steward after the organization cited a conflict between his duties and his media work. While acknowledging his valuable contributions, the FIA expressed concerns over his public comments on stewarding decisions, particularly on betting websites. Herbert’s dismissal follows controversy from last year’s Mexico City Grand Prix where he served as a steward.
After Max Verstappen received two 10-second penalties for incidents involving Lando Norris, Verstappen’s father, Jos criticized the FIA’s steward selection. In response, Johnny Herbert defended the penalties in an interview with a gambling outlet, called Verstappen’s driving “over the top,” and denied accusations of British bias. His departure reflects a broader shake-up within the FIA as several high-profile officials have left in the past year.
Before the Sao Paulo Grand Prix, FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem dismissed American steward Tim Mayer, reportedly due to Mayer’s involvement in an appeal by the Circuit of the Americas. Other officials who exited include F1 race director Niels Wittich, deputy Formula 2 race director Janette Tan and FIA compliance officer Paolo Basarri.
Additionally, the FIA has introduced governance changes that critics argue reduce accountability. Recently, the organization implemented new rules that outline how drivers could face race bans for swearing or criticizing FIA officials, further fueling concerns within the sport.
