Lando Norris faces a crucial challenge in Brazil as he seeks to score significant points to keep Max Verstappen from edging closer to his fourth consecutive Formula One championship. Norris arrives at São Paulo’s vibrant Interlagos circuit trailing Red Bull’s champion by 47 points. With only four races left a maximum of 120 points remains up for grabs.
Verstappen stands as the clear title favorite, requiring Norris to outscore him by an average of 12 points per race. However, the McLaren driver has a chance if circumstances favor him. Ferrari has been gaining momentum and is on the verge of clinching three consecutive wins in the Americas seeking their first constructors’ title since 2008. If Norris can secure a victory it could push Verstappen further down the rankings.
Still, Ferrari just 29 points behind McLaren after strong performances in Texas and Mexico will be tough competitors. Lando Norris and Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz both believe in their title chances. Sainz, who won from pole in Mexico City, mentioned they are discussing their title aspirations more frequently. Verstappen’s recent two 10-second penalties in Mexico might also affect the title contenders’ racing strategies moving forward.
This weekend in Brazil features a sprint race which adds eight additional points up for grabs and Verstappen has won all previous sprint events this season. He also triumphed in last year’s sprint and the main race in Brazil. Verstappen, who finished sixth in Mexico acknowledged that his performance in Mexico was disappointing and is focused on improving for the final races.
Meanwhile, his teammate Sergio Perez faces scrutiny after a lackluster run with Red Bull’s Christian Horner questioning Perez’s position on the grid moving forward. Mercedes led by Lewis Hamilton aims to stay competitive but recognizes the strength of Ferrari and McLaren in recent races.
