Lando Norris felt a mix of disappointment and delight after the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. He was disappointed because he believed bad luck in qualifying including an unfairly timed yellow flag, deprived him of a potential victory. Despite starting 17th due to this misfortune, Norris finished fourth and demonstrated remarkable progress but he couldn’t avoid reflecting on what might have been.

On the positive side, Norris celebrated his teammate Oscar Piastri’s victory in Baku. He also took pride in helping McLaren overtake Red Bull to lead the constructors’ championship. McLaren reached the top of the standings for the first time since 2014 and won their first constructors’ title since 1998, aside from their disqualification in 2007.

McLaren’s team principal, Andrea Stella, highlighted the milestone’s significance, noting the team’s progress from starting 2023 in last place. He stressed the need to stay focused and avoid complacency, emphasizing that they still need to improve the car’s performance. From Red Bull’s perspective, they lost their lead in the championship for the first time since mid-2022.

Max Verstappen, who dominated early in the season, hasn’t won a race in the last seven events. McLaren’s resurgence has made the championship race more competitive. Lando Norris’s frustration with his qualifying position faded when he considered his role in helping Piastri win and contribute to McLaren’s lead.

He played a crucial role by defending against Red Bull’s Sergio Perez, allowing Piastri to maintain a strong position. Norris’s teamwork and performance highlighted his personal drive and dedication to the team’s success.
