Lando Norris Clinches McLaren's First F1 Title in 26 Years
Lando Norris’ victory in Abu Dhabi sealed McLaren’s first constructors’ championship in 26 years with Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc finishing second and third, respectively. Lewis Hamilton narrowly beat teammate George Russell to fourth place in his final race for Mercedes. In a post-race Q&A, BBC F1 correspondent Andrew Benson addresses key questions following the season finale.
Max Verstappen’s Future at Mercedes
Despite the recent tension between Verstappen and George Russell in Qatar, the spat hasn’t made Verstappen’s 2026 move to Mercedes less likely. Verstappen’s contract with Red Bull runs until 2028 but he has the flexibility to explore options. Mercedes is keen on signing him and he could also consider a move to Ferrari or Aston Martin, especially if openings arise in those teams.
Hamilton vs. Russell
In their three seasons together, George Russell has generally outperformed Lewis Hamilton in race results. He finished ahead of Hamilton in two of the past three seasons. Although Hamilton has struggled in qualifying in 2024, he remains a formidable driver, often showing his strength in races. The relationship between the two Mercedes drivers remains respectful even as Hamilton prepares for his move to Ferrari.
Alonso and Hamilton’s Relationship
Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton, once fierce rivals at McLaren in 2007, now maintain a professional relationship. Despite occasional on-track clashes, there is mutual respect between them.
McLaren’s Strategy with Norris and Piastri
McLaren’s decision not to favor Lando Norris earlier in the season is debated. While the team could have given Norris more priority at events like Hungary and Monza, it’s unlikely it would have made him champion.
Red Bull’s Car Development for Verstappen
Red Bull designs the fastest car possible but given Verstappen’s superior feedback, the car has often been tailored to his preferences. Although Red Bull engineers deny favoring Verstappen, the car has become increasingly suited to his driving style.
