Lando Norris narrowed Max Verstappen’s championship lead to 47 points, labeling him “dangerous” after the Mexico City Grand Prix where tensions peaked. Verstappen received two 10-second penalties for incidents involving Norris but still finished sixth. Norris claimed second place, overtaking Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc with nine laps remaining, while Carlos Sainz dominated to secure the victory.
Verstappen’s penalties came from forcing Norris off track at Turn Four on lap 10 and gaining an advantage after leaving the track. His penalties contrasted sharply with last week’s race in Austin where he escaped punishment for similar driving tactics. Before the race, many drivers expressed concerns over Verstappen’s aggressive style, prompting discussions about changing racing guidelines to improve safety.
During the race, Verstappen attempted to repeat his Austin maneuver against Lando Norris but ended up penalized when Norris kept his car ahead at the apex of Turn Four. Norris commented over the radio, “I was ahead the whole way through the corner. This guy is dangerous. I have to avoid a crash.” Verstappen’s frustration was evident as he reacted negatively to the penalties.
Sainz controlled the race after briefly losing the lead to Verstappen on the first lap, passing him shortly after a safety car incident. Although Leclerc initially trailed Sainz closely, he fell back and Norris began to close in. On lap 62, Leclerc made a mistake allowing Norris to pass and secure second place.
Behind the podium finishers, Mercedes drivers George Russell and Lewis Hamilton engaged in a fierce battle with Hamilton eventually overtaking Russell with five laps to go. Verstappen’s teammate, Sergio Perez endured a difficult race finishing last after a false start penalty and a collision.
