Lando Norris: McLaren’s Success Still Possible in 2024
Lando Norris believes he and McLaren can still consider the 2024 season a success even if they don’t beat Red Bull’s Max Verstappen for the title. As they head into the United States Grand Prix, the first of the final six races, Norris trails Verstappen by 52 points. Despite the gap averaging nearly nine points per race, Norris remains optimistic. He feels confident after winning the previous race in Singapore, where Verstappen finished second.
Norris stated, “We’re fighting against the best of the best, but no matter what, it has still been a successful season.” The team narrowed the gap from 78 points after the Belgian Grand Prix, demonstrating McLaren’s progress. He acknowledged, “If I finish second, it’s because Red Bull and Max have done a better job. We started the season a long way behind, and everyone thought Max would have an easy win. For that not to be the case is something to be proud of.”
As the season progresses, Norris has adjusted his expectations. He emphasizes that McLaren now competes as a top team for both the drivers’ and constructors’ championships. He expressed confidence in his performance and the team’s efforts, stating, “If we keep our heads down and keep pushing, we can close the gap.” Verstappen, who has won seven races this season, noted the unpredictability of the remaining races.
He stated, “Nothing is guaranteed from both sides.” Every weekend is crucial.” Lando Norris reflected on missed opportunities, particularly regretting their performance at Silverstone, where they believed they should have done better. He acknowledged that their focus intensified after his first victory in Miami, adding, “I’m loving it… there is more pressure, but I am still very relaxed and chilled about it.”
