Lewis Hamilton crashed his Ferrari during the team’s pre-season testing in Spain but walked away unscathed. He lost control on his second day of running at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya while adapting to his new team after 12 years with Mercedes. Ferrari refused to comment but views the crash as a normal part of Hamilton’s learning process under F1’s strict testing limitations.
The team runs a limited program with its 2023 car, the latest model Hamilton can drive. F1 regulations allow current race drivers to complete a maximum of 1,000km (621 miles) of TPC (Testing of Previous Cars). Before heading to Barcelona for three days of testing alongside teammate Charles Leclerc, Hamilton completed 30 laps at Ferrari’s Fiorano test track on January 22.
Ferrari prioritizes integrating Hamilton into the team, helping him learn their procedures, working methods and develop chemistry with race engineer Riccardo Adami. The team has kept test details private but plans to give Hamilton more track time before launching its 2025 car at Fiorano on February 19. Next week, Hamilton will continue testing in a modified 2025 car that simulates the effects of the new 2026 regulations.
Ferrari will conduct two more days of running at Barcelona on February 4-5. Meanwhile, McLaren is holding a similar Pirelli tyre test at Paul Ricard in France. Despite the crash, Ferrari remains focused on preparing Lewis Hamilton for the upcoming season which begins at the Australian Grand Prix on March 14-16. His ability to adapt to the team and car will play a key role as he aims for a strong start with Ferrari in 2025.
