Lewis Hamilton: FIA Chief’s Language Has Racial Undertones

Lewis Hamilton has criticized FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem for using “stereotypical” language with a “racial element” while addressing swearing during Formula 1 broadcasts. Ben Sulayem had suggested that F1 needed to distinguish itself from rap music, stating, “We’re not rappers,” implying that profanity is more common in rap culture.

Hamilton responded, saying, “Saying ‘rappers’ is very stereotypical. Most rappers are black and when he says, ‘We are not like them,’ it carries racial connotations.” Lewis Hamilton acknowledged the importance of maintaining decorum in the sport especially for younger audiences but he felt that Ben Sulayem’s choice of words was inappropriate. The FIA has not commented on the controversy.

Ben Sulayem’s remarks made in an interview proposed penalties for drivers who swear over team radio emphasizing the need for responsible conduct, especially given the live nature of broadcasts. He expressed concern about how such language could affect young viewers suggesting that the FIA needs to study how to minimize inappropriate language in public settings.

Drivers like Max Verstappen and Lando Norris have pushed back against Ben Sulayem’s comments. Verstappen pointed out that swearing is natural and often unavoidable, suggesting that instead of banning language, the FIA should implement a delay to censor it. Norris emphasized the emotional intensity of racing arguing that it’s unrealistic to expect drivers to maintain perfect decorum during high-pressure situations.

This incident adds to a series of controversies surrounding Ben Sulayem since his appointment in December 2021 including legal disputes and public scrutiny regarding his statements and decisions.
