Lewis Hamilton's Final Mercedes Race: A Bittersweet End

Lewis Hamilton admitted that his final race with Mercedes in Abu Dhabi this weekend is unlikely to end on a high note. Despite a challenging final season, Hamilton emphasized that his priority was to give his best effort. The season has been frustrating with Hamilton consistently outperformed by teammate George Russell in qualifying, although he secured two wins at Silverstone and Spa. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff acknowledged the challenges this year as Hamilton decided to leave for Ferrari in 2025.

However, Wolff highlighted the remarkable achievements they shared over the past 12 years including eight consecutive Constructors’ titles and seven Drivers’ titles, six of which Hamilton won. Hamilton has made a massive impact on F1, breaking records and pushing for more diversity and inclusion within the sport. Hamilton decided to leave due to Mercedes’ struggles to adapt to new technical rules which led to fewer race wins.

Ferrari offered him a substantial pay rise and a long-term commitment which ultimately convinced him to make the move. Hamilton’s struggles this season have compounded with car issues, particularly with the unpredictable rear end. Despite these challenges, Mercedes praised his leadership especially his efforts to advocate for diversity. He led initiatives like Accelerate 25 which promotes hiring from underrepresented backgrounds.

Although his farewell comes without a record eighth title or redemption from the controversial 2021 Abu Dhabi race, Lewis Hamilton leaves behind an undeniable legacy with Mercedes. Wolff shared that their bond will remain even though they will no longer compete as teammates. Hamilton hopes that his decision won’t burn bridges and that their shared history will endure beyond racing.
