Logan Sargeant Out, Franco Colapinto In for Williams

Logan Sargeant has been replaced by academy driver Franco Colapinto for the remainder of the 2024 Formula 1 season. Sargeant, 23, faced mounting pressure throughout the year and saw his position further challenged by the recent announcement that Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz will join Williams in 2025 to partner with Alex Albon. Sargeant’s latest setback came during the Dutch Grand Prix weekend when he crashed heavily during third practice.

The incident caused significant damage to his car, preventing him from participating in qualifying. Despite this, Williams announced that Sargeant will remain within the Williams family in a different capacity. Franco Colapinto, a 21-year-old Formula 2 driver will replace Sargeant. Colapinto expressed his excitement about the opportunity, highlighting Williams’ rich history and its mission to return to the front of the grid.

Following the crash, team principal James Vowles explored driver options with Mercedes and Red Bull. Red Bull reserve driver Liam Lawson was unavailable for all remaining races due to uncertainties surrounding Sergio Perez and Daniel Ricciardo’s futures. Meanwhile, Mercedes chose not to disrupt Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s preparations for next year. Williams had previously rejected Mercedes reserve driver Mick Schumacher choosing to retain Sargeant.

Vowles decided to promote Colapinto from within the team’s driver program for the remaining nine races. He emphasized that the decision to swap Sargeant mid-season was challenging, especially with a significant car upgrade aimed at maximizing points in a tight midfield battle. Vowles praised Sargeant’s dedication and hard work throughout his tenure with Williams.

Logan Sargeant, who made his F1 debut in 2023 has scored just one point from 36 Grand Prix entries. Colapinto will make his debut for Williams at the Italian Grand Prix in Monza and currently sits sixth in the F2 drivers’ championship.
