Mattia Binotto says Audi faces a monumental challenge to turn its Sauber team into a Formula 1 contender. Audi will officially enter F1 in 2026 but has already assumed control of Switzerland-based Sauber this year. Binotto the former Ferrari team principal was appointed chief operating officer and chief technical officer in August, tasked with overseeing the transformation.

Binotto likened the challenge to “climbing Everest” and admitted that it will take several years for the team to become competitive. He aims for Audi to fight for championships by the end of the decade. Sauber, currently last in the constructors’ standings and without a point this season is far behind the top teams in terms of resources, personnel and infrastructure.

Binotto dismissed rumors that financial issues within Audi’s parent company VW Group, might jeopardize the F1 project. He stressed that Audi’s commitment to F1 is long-term with the goal to not only compete but win and remain in the sport. Audi’s leadership overhaul saw Binotto replace Andreas Seidl and Oliver Hoffmann amid concerns about the team’s progress.

A dual leadership model will see Red Bull’s Jonathan Wheatley join as team principal next year. Mattia Binotto will manage the factories in Switzerland and Germany while Wheatley will oversee race operations, a division Binotto believes will strengthen the team. Sauber’s recent struggles are partly due to the transition of ownership under Audi’s direction.

The focus on preparing for 2026 has slowed progress for the 2024 and 2025 seasons. Audi’s attraction to F1 lies in the upcoming 2026 engine regulations which emphasize increased electric power and sustainable fuels. As for drivers, Audi has signed Nico Hulkenberg and is weighing options for his teammate either a rookie or an experienced driver.
