Max Verstappen Dominates, Takes Pole at Austrian GP
Max Verstappen delivered a dominant performance to secure pole position for the Austrian Grand Prix ahead of McLaren’s Lando Norris. Following his earlier sprint race victory against Norris and McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri, Verstappen outpaced Norris by 0.404 seconds.
George Russell of Mercedes qualified third, trailing Verstappen by 0.526 seconds, after Piastri had his third-place time deleted for exceeding track limits at Turn Six. McLaren’s protest against Piastri’s penalty was dismissed. Carlos Sainz from Ferrari will start fourth, with Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes in fifth.
Max Verstappen, elated with his pole position, credited car adjustments for his improved performance, describing every lap as enjoyable and feeling in control. The Red Bull driver’s pole marks his first since the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix four races ago, showcasing his and Red Bull’s competitive resurgence.
Norris acknowledged Verstappen’s superior pace, emphasizing the challenging conditions for qualifying compared to the previous day. Despite McLaren’s efforts, Norris recognized the need for an extra edge to challenge Verstappen in Sunday’s race.
Russell expressed satisfaction with his car’s performance but acknowledged McLaren’s faster pace. Hamilton, disappointed with his middle sector performance, remained hopeful of a competitive race against Ferrari. Charles Leclerc, initially on pace for a top-three finish, lamented mistakes on his final lap, settling for seventh place.
Aston Martin continued to struggle, with Fernando Alonso finishing 15th, highlighting ongoing pace issues despite extensive car adjustments.
