Max Verstappen Faces Scrutiny Over Controversial Tactics
Max Verstappen, three-time world champion intensifies the spotlight on himself at this weekend’s São Paulo Grand Prix as he defends his lead in the drivers’ championship. Following the Mexico Grand Prix, Max Verstappen received penalties for his aggressive driving which included a controversial move that forced title rival Lando Norris off the track. Despite holding a 47-point lead in the championship, he now faces intense criticism for his actions.
Verstappen is known for his tactics of late braking and blocking which have sparked widespread backlash. Former champion Damon Hill even compared him to the cartoon villain Dick Dastardly. However, Verstappen defends his approach by pointing to his car’s performance issues and criticizing the inconsistency in the stewards’ rulings. Verstappen’s driving has prompted many drivers including Mercedes’ George Russell to favor stricter overtaking rules.
His tactics often push these rules to their limits, raising concerns among his peers. Hill condemned Verstappen’s lack of room for Norris in Mexico, calling the move “daft.” Meanwhile, Verstappen’s father, Jos encourages his son to maintain his aggressive driving style. He attributes the penalties to biased stewarding and argues that the car’s limitations compel Max to push the boundaries.
The controversy also prompted former driver Martin Brundle to weigh in, recognizing Verstappen’s skill but warning that his behavior could tarnish his legacy. Max Verstappen faces a likely five-place grid penalty in Brazil due to an engine change. This adds to the pressure as he aims to break a winless streak that has lasted since June. In addition, Ferrari aims to capitalize on its recent victory in Mexico and maintain its momentum in Brazil.
The team is closing in on McLaren for the constructors’ title, a feat it hasn’t achieved since 2008. Defending champions Red Bull, now third in the standings, battle additional challenges as Sergio Perez fights to retain his seat making this a crucial race as the season nears its end.
