Max Verstappen Threatens Exit Over FIA Controversy
Max Verstappen expressed frustration after the Singapore Grand Prix suggesting that recent controversies could hasten his exit from Formula 1. Following a punishment for swearing in a press conference after the Baku race, Verstappen felt his patience was wearing thin, stating that incidents like these made continuing in F1 less appealing. He emphasized that dealing with “silly” issues detracted from his authenticity and that if he couldn’t be himself, there was no point in staying.
“When it’s enough, it’s enough,” Verstappen said, adding that F1 could continue without him if necessary. The controversy started when Verstappen received a penalty from the FIA for swearing during a press conference. He protested by giving brief answers during post-qualifying interviews describing the punishment as “ridiculous.” Fellow drivers Lando Norris and Lewis Hamilton supported him, calling the situation “silly.”
Max Verstappen explained that while he had always cooperated with the FIA such penalties made him feel unfairly treated. He also criticized other FIA decisions including a fine issued to Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz for crossing the track after a crash. Verstappen expressed disbelief at these rulings, arguing they were unnecessary. Despite the distractions, Verstappen finished second in the Singapore race narrowing his title lead over Norris.
However, Norris, who won the race acknowledged that while his team is improving, Verstappen’s dominance makes it difficult to close the gap significantly. McLaren’s strong performance gave the team hope for future races but Verstappen remains in control of the championship.
