Max Verstappen Wins Fourth Title in Unpredictable F1 Season

Max Verstappen may have clinched his fourth consecutive drivers’ title but the 2024 Formula 1 season was far from predictable. McLaren secured the constructors’ championship and alongside Ferrari and Mercedes, they won 15 of the 24 races. This contrasted with 2023 when Red Bull dominated with 23 wins.

The BBC Radio 5 Live F1 team reflected on their highlights and lowlights from the season. For many, the British Grand Prix stood out with Lewis Hamilton claiming victory in his final race as a Mercedes driver, a moment full of emotion and excitement.

The Sao Paulo Grand Prix also made an impression with Max Verstappen’s remarkable comeback from 17th on the grid to win, solidifying his championship lead. In terms of standout moments, Lando Norris and Verstappen’s on-track battles in multiple races and Oscar Piastri’s bold overtaking in Baku were highlights.

Carlos Sainz’s Australian GP victory, following a brief recovery from appendicitis was another memorable feat. Meanwhile, the two Alpine drivers finishing on the podium in Sao Paulo demonstrated the team’s strong recovery. Disappointments included Sergio Perez’s struggles at Red Bull which contributed to the team slipping to third in the constructors’ standings.

Controversies ranged from FIA governance issues to the ongoing distraction surrounding Red Bull team principal Christian Horner, who faced allegations of misconduct. Looking ahead to 2025, the team hopes for a closer championship battle with more drivers like Norris, Verstappen and Hamilton challenging for the title.

There’s also a desire to see fewer team orders, ensuring more unadulterated racing. The 2025 season could be one of the most exciting with McLaren, Ferrari, Red Bull and Mercedes all poised for strong performances.
