Yuki Tsunoda has committed to another season with Red Bull’s secondary team, RB, extending his tenure into 2025. The team, formerly known as AlphaTauri, exercised their contractual option on the Japanese driver, who Red Bull nurtures under their engine partner, Honda. Team principal Laurent Mekies expressed admiration for Tsunoda’s remarkable progress throughout the current season, labeling it as “simply phenomenal.” Mekies praised Tsunoda’s consistent performance and highlighted his evolution into a more mature and team-oriented racer.
Yuki Tsunoda reciprocated the sentiment, expressing his satisfaction with the early confirmation of his future with the team. He emphasized his eagerness to contribute to the team’s ambitious development project and acknowledged the recognition of his hard work and potential. While Tsunoda’s retention was confirmed, RB remained silent on the status of their second seat, presently occupied by Daniel Ricciardo. The team faces a decision between retaining the Australian driver, who has faced challenges in matching Tsunoda’s performance, or promoting reserve driver Liam Lawson.
Lawson, a talented New Zealander, made a strong impression during his five-race stint last year when he substituted for Ricciardo following the latter’s injury at the Dutch Grand Prix. The team’s deliberation over the second seat underscores the competitive nature of Formula 1 and the importance of selecting drivers who can consistently deliver strong performances. As RB prepares for the upcoming season and beyond, their decision regarding the second driver will play a crucial role in shaping the team’s future success on the track.
