Jorge Martin moved closer to securing his first MotoGP championship with a sprint victory at the Malaysian Grand Prix on Saturday. The Spanish rider for Pramac Ducati, who finished second to Francesco Bagnaia last year, now enjoys a 29-point lead over the Italian. Martin can clinch the title on Sunday especially after Bagnaia crashed out of the race.
With 25 points awarded for a win, Martin needs to outscore Bagnaia by at least nine points to claim the championship a round early. The season’s final race, originally scheduled for November 15 in Valencia has faced cancellation due to flooding in the area. Officials will hold a replacement race at a yet-to-be-determined location.
In Saturday’s race, six-time champion Marc Marquez marked his return to form by finishing in second place while Bagnaia’s teammate Enea Bastianini secured the final podium spot. Martin quickly overtook polesitter Bagnaia as they entered the first turn.
However, Bagnaia, who had set a lap record to secure pole position earlier encountered a setback when he lost the front end of his bike and crashed on the third lap. Bagnaia’s crash effectively ended his hopes of winning a third championship, leaving him visibly distressed as he recognized that his chances had slipped away.
The upcoming race presents Martin with a significant opportunity to secure his title while Bagnaia’s early exit has shifted the dynamics of the championship battle heading into the final races of the season.
