Jorge Martin heads into this weekend’s race at Sepang, Malaysia with the MotoGP world championship title within his grasp as he prepares to face off against Italy’s Francesco Bagnaia. Currently holding a 17-point lead, the Pramac Ducati rider aims to secure his first championship title in the penultimate race of the season. Meanwhile, two-time defending champion Bagnaia also riding for Ducati knows he has little room for error and that Martin could mathematically clinch the crown this weekend.
The title race may stretch to the final round in Valencia next month with 74 points still up for grabs but Bagnaia recently gained momentum with a victory in the wet conditions at the Thai Grand Prix in Buriram marking his ninth win of the season. Martin, who finished second in Thailand focuses on maintaining consistent performances in the remaining races to ensure he secures the championship.
Weather conditions at Sepang could mirror those in Thailand with rain forecasted for both the Saturday sprint and Sunday’s main event. Jorge Martin experienced some challenging moments in the wet conditions in Buriram but emerged unscathed in the title race. Reflecting on the championship battle, Martin acknowledged Bagnaia’s strength as a competitor, stating, “It’s really difficult to be Pecco or me at this stage of the championship.”
Confident after his recent win, Bagnaia noted that Malaysia is a track where he has historically performed well. Last year, his teammate Enea Bastianini won the race while Bagnaia finished third and Martin took fourth. This time, the roles have reversed as Bagnaia pursues Martin in the championship standings. After his victory, Bagnaia reiterated his determination, declaring, “I never give up… I will never give up while I still have a chance.”
