Australian Open tournament director Craig Tiley expresses concern about the future of doubles in professional tennis. The ATP is reviewing doubles and Tiley advocates for changes citing a lack of ranking points, prize money and player narrative. Tiley believes doubles needs to “mean something” and emphasizes the importance of making decisions to enhance its value. Doubles finals at the Australian Open struggled with attendance prompting the review.

Australian player Matt Ebden part of the ATP Player Advisory Council supports the review emphasizing the unique potential of doubles and proposing fan-engagement initiatives. Tiley also discusses innovations in the tournament addressing concerns like the “let” rule and clarifying revenue aspects. Meetings on the professional tour schedule including discussions about a stop in Saudi Arabia are ongoing. Tiley denies being a sole leader in resisting a radical tour restructure emphasizing a collective approach.
