Russian third seed Daniil Medvedev faced a tough challenge in the Australian Open first round as he came from a set down against Terence Atmane.
However, Atmane had to quit due to cramps, with Medvedev leading 5-7, 6-2, 6-4, 1-0. Medvedev acknowledged the difficult conditions, with outside temperatures reaching 27C. Meanwhile, Greek seventh seed Stefanos Tsitsipas and 10th seed Alex de Minaur secured wins. Former champions Stan Wawrinka and Dominic Thiem faced losses in five-set battles.
Wawrinka expressed hope for a return, while Thiem fought hard but fell to 27th seed Felix Auger-Aliassime. Other notable victories included 16th seed Ben Shelton and 29th seed Sebastian Korda.
