Matteo Berrettini has withdrawn from the Australian Open due to a right foot injury, marking the fourth time in the last eight Grand Slam tournaments that he couldn’t play.
The Italian, a former Wimbledon finalist, was set to face Stefanos Tsitsipas in a highly anticipated first-round match. Berrettini has been sidelined since a US Open ankle injury, having also missed tournaments due to an abdominal issue and hand surgery in 2022, as well as a COVID-19 positive test before Wimbledon. Once ranked sixth globally, he now sits at 125.
Belgian Zizou Bergs replaces Berrettini in the draw. Meanwhile, Jannik Sinner, the fourth seed, began his campaign with a straight-sets win, and Marin Cilic, returning from knee surgery, lost in four sets to Fabian Marozsan.
